Dolomites Italy

The Dolomites are a mountain range situated in the northeastern region of Italy. They are a part of the Southern Limestone Alps and stretch from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern boundaries are marked by the Puster Valley and the Sugana Valley (Italian: Valsugana). The Dolomites are almost equally divided among the provinces of Belluno, South Tyrol, and Trentino. Other mountain groups with similar geological composition are scattered along the River Piave to the east – Dolomiti d'Oltrepiave; and far across the Adige River to the west – Dolomiti di Brenta (Western Dolomites). A smaller group known as Piccole Dolomiti (Little Dolomites) is located between the provinces of Trentino, Verona, and Vicenza (refer to map). The Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park along with numerous other regional parks are situated in the Dolomites. In August 2009, the Dolomites were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
