Pompeii Italy

Pompeii was an ancient city of the Roman Empire, located near what is now Naples, in the Campania region of Italy, within the territory of the municipality of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum and numerous villas in the nearby area, Pompeii was largely destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Scholars think that the city was established in the seventh or sixth century BC by the Osci or Oscans. It fell under Roman control in the 4th century BC, and was overtaken and transformed into a Roman colony in 80 BC after it participated in a failed revolt against the Roman Republic.
